Frequently Asked Questions About Adult High School Enrollment:
1. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
There is no cost. This program is sponsored by the Wilson County Board of Education.
2. I’M 19; DO I NEED TO WAIT 45 DAYS?
There is no waiting period for students who are 19 years of age.
3. I’M 17, CAN I ATTEND THE ADULT HIGH SCHOOL?
We accept students who are 18 years of age and out of school 45 days. There is a hardship provision for extreme family situations, and a letter of appeal must be written.
4. WHAT HOURS ARE YOU OPEN?
Please see the information in the brochure.
5. IS THIS A REGULAR DIPLOMA?
The Adult High School diploma is a regular high school diploma, not a GED. Students who do not pass the state required tests, but complete all credits will receive Certificates of Attendance.
6. DO I HAVE TO TAKE THE TCAP AND GATEWAY TESTS?
Yes.
7. ARE ESL SERVICES PROVIDED?
We refer students to the community classes.
8. IS THERE HOMEWORK?
All work must be done at school because the credit is based on contact hours, and completion of the assigned work. Students may be given practice study sheets to take home.
9. ARE THE CLASSES LIKE REGULAR SCHOOL?
This program is an unstructured, flexible-setting program. Students choose their own days and hours of attendance. Each student works from a course outline at his or her own pace, and individual and small group instruction is given.
10. IS CHILDCARE AVAILABLE?
Not at this time.
11. WILL I BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN MY SCHOOL’S GRADUATION?
We have our own graduation ceremony in June. Students may purchase caps and gowns and receive invitations.
12. WHAT IF I WANT TO GO BACK TO MY REGULAR SCHOOL?
Generally, the credits transfer only one way.
13. I WANT TO GO ON TO SCHOOL AFTER GRADUATION, IS THERE ANYONE THERE WHO CAN HELP ME WITH THIS?
Yes, we have a certified guidance counselor on staff, and we have a small career center. We can help you with locating information and financial aid. We offer a $500 scholarship each year to one or more of our graduates.
14. AM I TOO OLD TO COME BACK TO SCHOOL?
No, our first graduate was 67 years old.
15. WHEN MAY I BEGIN?
Students will be asked to schedule an appointment for orientation at their earliest convenience. Unless there is a current waiting list, the only limitation is for 18 year-old students who have not been withdrawn from school for 45 days.
16. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE ME TO COMPLETE MY CREDITS?
The minimum time required is 133 hours/credit. The length of time to earn a diploma is determined by the number of credits a student is lacking and needs to complete.
